Macaw Clay Lick & Sandoval Lake 5 Days / 4 Nights
The macaw clay licks is the clay formation by river action and is located in the ravine of the rivers. Every morning at dawn, the macaws, among other birds, go to this place. The reason why these birds consume clay is according to researchers say it contains vital salts and minerals used in the diet of the animals who consume.
Itinerary
Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Lodge Tambopata
Arrival at the airport or bus station and transfer to the office of Monte Amazoníco Lodge and his tour Operator Carlos Expeditions for the final talk about our tour before leaving to our adventure. In case you have big luggage, we suggest re pack to store the not needed items and carry just enough for the trip.
Land transfer (4X4) wheeled truck to our destination for about 2 hours to reach the banks of the Tambopata River, if by river it will take more than 6 hours (just information). In this place we will take a boat to the lodge “Monte Amazoníco – Tambopata.” Welcome and Breakfast or lunch depending on the arrival time.
In the afternoon we make an introductory walk into the rainforest where we will have the opportunity to see animals in their natural habitat as amphibians, mammals, reptiles and wonderful insects, among others.
Day 2: Chuncho – Botanical Garden
We wake up very early, at 4:30 am, to go on an incredible journey by boat to the world’s largest macaw clay lick “ EL CHUNCHO”, a journey of about 1:30 hours by boat, on the way we will have the opportunity to see some species such as capybaras, which is the world’s largest rodents, tapirs, and you can even see the most beautiful South American feline, jaguar, many of our clients are witnesses with photographic evidence of encounters with these beautiful mammals.
After arrival to the macaw clay lick you will see hundreds of parrots of different species (11) come to eat clay adjacent to the river on the wall We will accommodate us in our chairs to wait to begin one of the most beautiful natural sights of birds in the world. A parrots are followed by 3 species of the most colorful macaws of America, reds and greens, blues and yellows come to gather to eat clay needed in your daily diet and eliminate toxins. On a good day of activity you will see hundreds of these wonderful animals flying over you. An experience for life
Return to our lodge, breakfast and resting time.
-Then we will walk through the botanical garden where you can see some fruit, timber and medicinal species in our area, in the company of our guide. Lunch
In the afternoon we will have the opportunity to kayak the Tambopata River where we will move silently along the river, so we will have more opportunity to observe the larger animals of the Tambopata Reserve
For the night off to rest or possibility of another night walk.
Day 3 :Island Of The Monkeys
After a hearty breakfast, our boat takes us to transport back to Puerto Maldonado and transfer to the port where we will take the boat for an hour until our lodge welcome with a refreshing fruit juice of our region . Accommodation is given.
After a rest, you will have a hike for two hours in the dense tropical forest, guided by an expert who will take you through our trails and you can see a variety of trees that can have more than five hundred years, so you can observe some species of wild animals such as toucans, orioles, parrots, monkeys, snakes, butterflies, etc. You will have the opportunity to experience the magic of our Amazon jungle inside TAMBOPATA NATIONAL WILDLIFE RESERVE (278,000 thousand hectares protected).
After lunch, we visit the “Monkey Island”, located in front of our lodge across the Madre de Dios River where we find different species of monkeys living on the island those species are the brown capuchin, squirrel monkey and saddle back tamarin; and return to the Lodge.
In the evening we will go for caiman search, white alligators are typically found on sand banks in the Madre de Dios River for which it will need to bring a flashlight. Also, we may see some capybara too, back to lodge, dinner and rest.
Day 4: Lake Sandoval
After breakfast walk 3 km. In the midst of the dense rain forest and headed to Lake Sandoval (piranha habitat) one of the largest in the Tambopata National Reserve and stroll in a rowing boat where we will appreciate many birds of different species (shansho cormorant jacanas, puma heron, buzzards, howler monkey, brown capuchin monkey, tamarins and sloths). Maybe we will meet with the family of giant river otters (almost two meters long) that is in danger of extinction, return to the lodge to enjoy a typical lunch.
In the evening we will one more opportunity to walk where we can appreciate diversity of species of insects, amphibians, reptiles and other nocturnal animals. – Dinner and rest.
Day 5: Canopy
5.30a.m. in the jungle Morning and a short walk to our canopy walk-way, about 30 meters high, allowing us to appreciate nature from as high as possible, we will also have a panoramic view of the Madre de Dios river. From platforms observe different species of birds, including toucans, macaws, tanagers, orioles, for sure it will be a wonderful experience.
Breakfast and return to the city, airport transfer and / or bus station.
