Macaw Clay Lick-Sandoval Lake (4 Days – 3 Nights)

The Macaw Clay Licks is a clay formation that thanks to the erosion of the river. Every morning the macaws, among other birds, go to this place to ingest for about 30 minutes. The clay that according to the researchers say that it contains properties that allow neutralizing the toxins that contain some fruits that they consume. This excursion is prepared for all nature lovers, you will live unforgettable moments, enjoying the Collpa de Guacamayos and the wonderful Sandoval Lake, a beautiful natural paradise full of flora and fauna.

Itinerary

Day 1: Tambopata Lodge

We wait for you at Puerto Maldonado airport or terrestrial terminal, from there we will transfer by land (4×4) to Monte Amazónico (2 hours) for the corresponding records, here we will take the boat to “the Amazonian lodge- Tambopata arriving, they will give us the welcome and enjoy a delicious lunch, typical food of the area. In the afternoon, we will do an introductory walk, where you will have the opportunity to see animals of the place in their natural habitat, such as amphibians, mammals, reptiles, insects and others. After the walk, please go to dinner and rest.

Day 2: Macaw Clay Licks – Monkey Island

We will wake up very early to go to the Collpa de Guacamayos “CHUNCHO” (4:30 am approximately) we will travel by boat for 1h and 30min, during the tour we will have the opportunity to observe the different species such as the sachavaca, the South American jaguar, between others. Arriving at the Collpas de Guacamayos, we will see hundreds of parrots and more colorful macaw species of America, such as greens, reds, blues and yellows that come to eat clay to eliminate toxins, we will observe the spectacular reunion of these birds, it will be an unforgettable experience. Then we will enjoy a good breakfast, we will return to our lodge for 1h approx. by boat, we will rest for a while before lunch to continue with our next adventure the visit to the famous Isla de los Monos where we will observe the family of capuchins, monkey friar, among others.

Returning to the lodge and at night we will go in search of white alligators, which are usually found in the sand of the Madre de Dios River to observe them we will need a flashlight, we will see the capybara, which is the largest rodent in the world weighing 60 kilos. After a walk we will go to our lodge to have dinner and rest.

Day 3: Lake Sandoval

After delicious breakfast, we will walk 3km. in the middle of the jungle, we will go  to the famous Sandoval Lake (inhabited by piranha fish), it is one of the largest lakes of the Tambopata National Reserve, we will have a boat ride on the lake where we will observe a great variety of birds, monkeys different species and if we are lucky, we will have the encounter with the family of giant otters with almost two meters long, the largest caimans with 4 meters long, after an adventure full of experiences we will go to the lodge to taste the typical lunch. At night we will have a walk around the Sandoval lake we will appreciate the diversity of amphibians, insects, reptiles, and other nocturnal animals. Returning to the lodge we will have dinner and rest.

Day 4: Canopy- Puerto Maldonado

Very early at 5:30 am we will walk through the canopy walk- way, over 30m high that will allow us to appreciate nature, we will also have a panoramic view of the Madre de Dios river, as well as observe different species of birds like toucans, macaws, tanagers, among others. It will be an unforgettable experience. On return we will have breakfast and return to the city of Puerto Maldonado, transfer to the airport or bus station.

Important

  • Just take what you need; the rest of your luggage can be at our offices in Puerto Maldonado.
  • Small backpack for your daily outings.
  • Bring repellent, flashlight, binoculars, personal utensils, sunscreen and sneakers for walking, shirts and long pants.
  • The lodge has a limited power plant there is electricity from 5 am to 10 pm; during that period, you can recharge your camera, cell phone and make use of the fans.
  • It recommended that in advance inform about any special request, if you have any food restriction, allergies, etc.
